I have recently got an Engwe P26 and I am a little puzzled about the strength of the motor.
This has a 250W motor in read wheel, and when I use it in "high speed" - like 15km/h and more it is great.
It has a 7 gear Shimano. Battery life seems good - around 40% left after 35km usage.

The thing that puzzles me is that when I meet a really steep hill and have to go down to 1st or 2nd gear it feels like there is little help from the engine at all.

Is this how these bikes are, or is something wrong?
Difficult to know for a first time user.

We have 2 of these bikes and to me it seems like the newest are a little stronger on the low speeds.
I am going to try to replace the freewheel with one having a larger ratio (34 instead of 28) to see if I get the needed ability to take on the steepest hills at low speed. (Typically trails)

I did the upgrade / change from 28 to 34 teeth on the low gear and also had to replace the chain from 110 to 116 links. Seems to work well. Need to do some fine adjustment it seems, but it do work. Did go for genuine Shimano parts.

I believe you can also set how many pedal assist levels you have with that display, increasing it to 9, might give you more help on the hills.
Yes, that is correct. I think using 9 or 7 is the best to get the best adjustments. But it is still only 40Nm and the hub motor works best on higher speeds.

I have a uk enqwe LS20SE, 250 w. It gets me up hills fine, just need to choose the right gear and pedal assist setting
I had no luck with selecting 7 or 9 PAS levels as the percentage ratios are all random and can’t be changed.
I bought a 2nd hand specialised step trey in the end and installed a 250w horse power yose power kit with 15ah battery and I’ve had 51miles out of one charge and the bike only Weighs 26kg compared to the Engwe that weighs 40 kg.

Since this is a different bike the gearing could be quite different from fabric. Wheelsize also affect this.

Doesn’t change the fact that the Engwe is a lot heavier and the PAS ratios can’t be changed.
The varied gearing on my 26” wheeled bike easily matches that of the 20” wheeled Engwe.
Knowing what I know now I wouldn’t have bought the Engwe as despite all the well meaning reviews, for an older person such as myself who bought it to improve my fitness I have to ride everywhere with power assist due to it’s weight and the slowest I can ride it at is 8mph, where as my 26” conversion kit bike I managed to programme the PAS to suit my needs and easily ride between 4 and 15mph using 7 levels of PAS of ride it without any assistance on the flats.

About the PAS ratios - I think I have seen some video where somebody have done this. But I have not tried. Instead I find it good just to use 7 or 9 levels instead of the default 5.

There are various videos on YouTube of how to get into the additional setting menu of the KD21C display if that’s the one you have.
Basically after pressing the + & - button for two seconds, press and hold them again and this will get you into additional settings..
