I have a 500w 36v ebike that does about 20mph on a flat surface. I would like to add a front hub motor and upgrade the voltage to 48v, so it would be a twin 500w ebike with 48v. How would it compare to a 1000w 48v ebike with 48v? What would be the top speed? Would the torque be greater?

A second hub motor you should definitely increase the torque & speed. On a 48v dual 1000w motor ebike from the vids I've watched adding the 2nd hub motor on a 1000w system is seeing about a 6-8mph increase in speed. I think your speed & torque will also depend on what controller/controllers you will be using as well.

I would think adding a 2nd 500w hub motor would at least increase your speed by 2-4mph. I maybe totally wrong too. I think alot will depend on what controller/controllers & your battery/batterys setup.
