Range extending Mahle X35 batteries getting cheaper?

Look into your crystal ball for me.

$650 for a range extending battery seems expensive. Maybe not in today's market.
I will be doing a couple of Fall trips to ride forest service gravel roads in the mountains and really would feel more comfortable with greater range. Any chance these types of batteries will drop in price fairly soon?

Are there alternatives that would fit in a bottle cage - instead of buying from Mahle or Orbea?

I bought the range extending battery system from volabike.com
Fast delivery from Spain, good instructions with good pictures for illustration.
50% more Wh and $135 saved over buying from Orbea or Mahle for the X35 rear hub motor.

Does the Volabike extender work in the same way as the Mahle one? (i.e it charges the internal battery)

Yes, the Volabike plugs directly into the bike's battery charging port.
