I have a Trek fx2+. I bought it last year at just about this time. When I got it out last week for the first time since it's been sitting for 4 months this winter the controller lights that indicate the speed mode are flashing every 30 to 60 seconds or so. The controller only has green and red lights. The green ones indicate battery life and the three red indicate the motor level I am in. The bike still seems to work as before but all three red lights flash every 30 -60 seconds during a ride. I am bringing it to the dealer soon and they are assuming it needs a firmware upgrade. $30. He mentioned it might need a firmware upgrade at least twice a year. I am not happy with that. It seems excessive. Is there another option for this bike. Can I do this upgrade myself? Will it be harmful if I don't have the upgrade and just let it flash? especially if things are still working.
Thanks for any info

Chances are if it's flashing there is something being detected. Seems weird that it would "know" its firmware was out of date in the way you described. Usually if something is connected to the internet via your phone, whatever app is being used would indicate there is a firmware update to be aware of.

I don't have a trek, so I don't know for sure. You may go to their website and see what version firmware they are on and when it was released.

Thank you, It's going to the shop today and we'll see what the deal is. There is no way to understand what the firmware might be? There is nothing on the app. So I'll have to see what the shop says.

I really hate it when bike companies do this to you. Luckily, according to what I found you don't have to get the firmware upgrade. You can just keep riding it, as it is. I'll add a post from Reddit on how to read your firmware stats, so you know where you are. You could decide to wait until there are a number of upgrades and then go in to have it done, but make sure they only charge you the one fee. I'll let you know if I find a way to turn off the idiotic flashing.

I did get an update and the gentleman who I brought it in said it might need one even twice a year. When I picked it up the young lady said it was indeed a firmware update and I might not need another one for a few years. I am not happy it costs $30 to do each time it needs it. Since the bike was still working properly I might not do this each time it flashes. The young woman said an upgrade is generally needed if you replace parts like a battery. So it's not affecting my riding.
