Basically there are two types of Pedal Assist: Cadence Sensor & Torque Sensor. A Cadence Sensor simply measures IF you are pedaling where as a Torque Sensor measures HOW HARD you are pedaling.
Cadence Sensor
This is simply a magnet on the crank which senses when you are pedaling and turn on the power assistance to a set level.
Torque Sensor
This measures how much force you put on the pedal by sampling your entire pedal stroke at 1,000 times per second. So the harder you pedal the more electrical assist it will give you.
