Hello new forum friends!!

I am Joe from Maryland. I am new to electric bikes but are REALLY looking forward to the adventures. I have done SOME research and have some ideas. I hope to buy a bike for me at first then if I can ride it OK a bike for my wife. I am 57, a licensed motorcycle rider, and someone who really needs to get back outside. I broke my back some years ago when I fell through a roof responding to a fire. I gained a ton of weight being bedridden so long.

It is only recently I feel well enough to reclaim my outdoor interests. In the 15 years after breaking my back, I got fat. FAT. That has made me very sad, and I am fixing it. My big concern is getting out somewhere and not being able to get back.

Hence the desire for an electric bike! The ultimate solution!!! I look forward to learning from the group and contributing where I can.

Have a GREAT day!

Joe

Greetings from a fellow fat man!
I know there are those detractors that say e-bikes are not exercise, but for those of us whose previous exercise has been walking to the bathroom it is a huge improvement.
I have been riding about a month and put 100 miles on my bike.
I can now wear my 2xl shirts again and am two notches tighter on my belt. My weight is actually heavier but I suspect that is swapping fat for muscle.
I suggest getting a bike with a luggage rack and getting grocery bag panniers (saddlebags) to make the bike useful as well as fun.
When you get it do all your grocery and incidental shopping on the bike. Do as little driving as possible.
I got the Buzz Bike grocery panniers and they work great! I can fit 8-10 plastic grocery bags in the panniers. At $25 each they are a good deal.
Of course I went overboard and got a bike bundle with a trailer. I can actually carry two five gallon bottles of water in the trailer.
I used to recommend Magicycle until I discovered they do not honor their warranty. Their products seem good and their support is great as long as you are not asking them to replace a part at which time they stonewall you with excuses.
If you want service and warranty buy your bike from your local bicycle shop. From what I have read with pretty much any bike ordered from china getting warranty service is a fantasy.

Welcome from another Marylander. Are you anywhere near the B&A trail? It's a great place to ride if you are.

I am 15 minutes by car from there, I live in Elkridge. THAT is one of the trails I look forward to for sure! I know MD has many regulations and such and has a ridiculous watt limit. I assume there is no hassling you if you are obeying the rules. I want to exercise not hurt anyone. I also look forward to the B and A trail...

Atavar, I like the look of the Magic Cycle and its capacity is GREAT, but the customer service issue is a concern. Odds are you are lighter than me will it pull you up a decent hill? Hope you eventually got it worked out.

Welcome and I too am a new member from SOMD. I summer in Calvert County. My wife has a Mooncool TK1 Folding Trike and I have the Lectric XP Long Range 3.0. We like our bikes a bunch. Ride the Three Notch and Indianhead Rail2Trail often. Bikes are 1 month old and we have ridden them over 190 miles. BTW I am 68 yrs old and also FAT from doing nothing.

I am 285lbs and with a fresh battery the Magicycle has no problem pulling me over walkway overpasses at 20+ mph.
If it weren’t for their crappy warranty response I would heartily recommend them. Also it is a very tall bike. If you are not at least a limber 32” inseam a step through frame is a must.

Since you are in Elkridge you are very close to Patapsco State Park. Avalon and Orange Grove areas are great places to ride with minimal hills. The Grist mill trail is paved and only 2.5 miles long. It runs right beside the river with several historic sights along the way. If you want to ride a hill go under the tunnel near the parking lot at the lost lake (Avalon) area and bear left up the hill. Free entrance if you are a veteran or have the Maryland Golden Age pass.

Welcome Joe. Make sure you tell us all what you got.

I got a Juiced HyperScorpion 3 years ago. It has good all-around performance for my 180 lbs.

Hello Joe, I am not far from you in Virginia! Have you bought an electric bike since you posted? Just curious what you decided to buy

I have not. I had an accident and hurt my hip . I aim to have one by the end of the month. i am pretty set on the Hemiway Cobra D7 Pro.

Sorry to hear about your accident. I hope your hip heals soon. The Himiway Cobra D7 Pro is a great choice!

Welcome, from SE Wisconsin!

Have you decided upon an eBike yet?
If so, what did you get?
If not, what is your budget?
What kind of riding will you be doing?

The reason I ask is that fat tire bikes are popular, but they're not very efficient on pavement and you will be quite reliant upon the motor. For many people, an urban-type eBike with smaller, smoother tires makes more sense.

Aventon, Lectric, Priority, and Ride1UP are all good companies with good after-sale support.

I have an Aventon Level.2 urban commuter type eBike, which is my main one. You can see my review thread in the Commuter Bikes subforum here.

I have a Lectric XP Lite that my daughter rides, and I use it for when I need one that's not too heavy to throw in the back of my car. You can see my review thread in the Folding eBikes subforum here.

I have an Electra feet-forward cruiser that my wife rides.

I used to have a Ride1UP Portola; a nice foldable multispeed eBike, but it got stolen in Colorado Springs this year. You can see my review thread in the Folding eBikes subforum here.

I had a Juiced HyperScrambler 2 eMoped. Nice bike, but batteries are very expensive ($700) and rarely in stock. I think I reviewed this one too, in the eMopeds subforum here.

I'm not sponsored, like a lot of the YouTube reviewers are.

Message me if you have any questions on those eBikes, and enjoy your stay!
