I am researching buying my first E bike. I live in Atlanta, Georgia and currently have a townie Electra. I ride several times a week for 5 to 7 miles, but would like to get a lightweight E bike to help with the atlanta area hills as I’m getting older and need the help I think to ride longer. I want it to still be exercise but help on the hills. I like step through and upright position of my current bike. I would also like to upgrade to something with front wheel suspension For riding on bike paths that sometimes have bumpy boardwalk sections. Want lightweight as possible so I can load by myself on car bike rack. My husband can do some minor maintenance on it but anything serious want to be able to take to a local bike shop for service. I am overwhelmed by all the ebike options. Thinking I probably need 500w motor for the occasional hills in my area, but am open to recommendations on motor size and bike brand/models. Would like to stay near $1000 if at all possible. Any help is most appreciated :)

You can’t really have “lightweight” along with “powerful”, “suspension” and “around $1,000”.

I think you’re on the right track with “lightweight” and “around $1k”.

Check out the Aventon Soltera.2. It’s good quality and light, which means you don’t need a ton of power. The power it does have will be a huge help climbing the hills. (I have family in the Atlanta suburbs, so I know what you mean)

Adding more power and front suspension means adding weight and cost, so it’s counter-productive a lot of the time.

Even the “lightweight” Soltera.2 is well over 40 lbs, which is about double the weight of a regular bike in that class.

The low gears along with 350 W of continuous motor power will do what you need in terms of hill climbing.

You can add a Redshift suspension stem in the future if desired.

Aventon is supported my many local shops and parts availability should be good.

A bit nicer would be a bike shop brand like Trek or Electra (they make eBikes now, my wife has a Townie GO! 7D) but will be about double your budget. Local support will be very easy though!
