I have a local shop that is authorized to work on Lectric bikes but NOT warranty work! What is the consensus on local bike shop maintenance on Lectric bike service?

I’d like to get one but don’t want to get up a creek without a paddle!

I am in Lee County. I called Paradise Bicycles, an authorized repair shop according to Lectric website, and they said that Lectric has dropped the ball to the point that the only way they would service them is if the customer got the parts from Lectric and Paradise would service and charge you labor regardless whether it was under warranty!

I don’t have the time, knowledge, and most importantly the DESIRE to learn/build/work on bikes or cars!

I just ride and drive, charge them and fill them with gas!

Any decent shop would stand behind their work, regardless of warranty.

If your local shop refuse to warranty or stand behind its work, likely you don't want to deal with them to begin with.

Exactly what "work" do you need done by local shop?

Overly concerned about after sales servicing is like worrying about occur, just get yourself worked up and miss out on riding time.

Since 99% of bike shops will NOT work on ebikes NOT purchased through their company because of liability issues, it CAN be an issue IF you buy online!

I haven’t purchased a bike from them, because of this policy!

Their XP 3 is rated one of the best folding bikes in the US and $500 cheaper than comparable folding bikes!

If something goes bad ESPECIALLY during warranty there is no place to take them!

THAT’S the issue in a nutshell!

That's a bold claim about 99% of the bike shops, care to back it up with real data or sources?

If you are constantly worried about a bike needing services, then you need to learn to operate and fix stuff on your own.

Right now it is the height of cycling season, most bike shops & manufacturers are overwhelmed with service calls, since people have been riding their bikes more frequently in the last couple of month.

If you're looking to buy new, cheap ebike, now you're only shopping for what's still in stock or leftover from the busy sales season.
Maybe you can score a good deal for season close-outs, but you'll just lose out on riding time for the remainder of the riding season.

As I said before: overly concerned about after sales servicing is like worrying about occur, just get yourself worked up and miss out on riding time.

If you can't or won't take the time to do repairs then maybe a "cheaper" e bike isn't the right fit. Where I live that leaves Bosch equipped bikes or Giant or Trek to name a couple. And thats why I install my own kits. Example would be my KHS fat bike with a Bafang BBSHD motor. Cost me around $3000 and it's been working great for 8 years now and it gets used summer and winter. A disclaimer though, with 3 kit bikes the riding time does get distributed among them.

I personally visited ALL local shops and called the ones I was willing to drive to and each and everyone said they will NOT service ebikes bought anywhere else but from them.

Before you ramble on again, I bought a Denago City Model 1 from a local shop waiting on fenders to arrive and be installed. The local shop I purchased from will service the bike indefinitely!

I was looking for a folding bike for my petite wife.

My research showed that the Lectric XP 3 was not only one of the top rated but also one of the best priced as well!

Since I’m 70 years old and would rather watch Mr. Rogers reruns than work on bikes, and have no option for a plan B IN THE EVENT of service needed, I’ll probably just bite the bullet and get the Denago Folding 1 sacrificing a top rated CHEAPER folding bike!

THAT’S how I think I’ll roll!

"All your local bike shop" doesn't represent "99% of bike shops" as you stated in your previous post.

In order to receive good service, you need to develop relationship with your local bike shop folks.

Often times, they will go above & beyond when you just ask about it the right way.

Get whatever you want, just know that you're picking from whatever's left in stock and most shops are so busy that they won't be able to provide top level service when you're not a regular customer by now.

To ease your anxiety about aftersales services, you're better to learn how to do them yourself.

Regardless how you may roll, I'm just giving you reality of seasonal bike business.

If something does go bad during the warranty service.....they will send you the part and....most likely.....a video as to how to repair it. If you can change out a light switch....you can work on an ebike......if you can't.....buy from a dealer......you will pay more....your choice. .

That’s definitely the bottom line!

Paradise are good people, though I haven't been in there for quite a while.

Have you talked to JRA? Some of the folks from the old Hollywood shop. They do not do warranty work on bikes they did not sell, but they will do bike work, on an ebike.

The issue with warranty work, with most shops, is that they are responsible for getting the work done, and the company will simply not supply the parts, and also pay extremely low labor rates for the service. It just does not make sense for them. Most will do as you found, they will do the work at standard rates, while the customer must haggle with the company for parts.

I will add here that I have done warranty work for many major companies, in the IT world, and it is not that different. Much hassle getting parts, low labor rates paid. I only do warranty jobs I can bill at my standard rate, and charge an hourly for time spent haggling for parts. One of the ways I learned good diagnostic procedures was to be able to PROVE to the company that a particular part was, in fact, defective.

In some industries, warranty labor costs are 100% absorbed by the dealer, with no company compensation whatsoever.

If you can change a flat tire, you can install a hub motor kit. You can choose from ALL available standard bicycles, choose a kit with widely available, standardized parts, get a few spares, choose a kit with EXACTLY the performance you want. My first install took less than two hours, I am not much younger than you, and not mechanically inclined, at all. I am an IT person. Recently switched to a new donor bike, entire kit installed in less than one hour, with a crescent wrench and a screwdriver.

My neighbor lady has the same kit on a trike, at 74 she loves it and it gets her to the store without having to Uber. Note on standard trikes, do NOT repeat NOT attempt to corner at anything over 8-10 mph. Maybe less.
