Lectric XP Lite Review Thread

Still looks chain drive to me. Did they remove a model from your linked page, or ...?

I'm onboard... (y)
Ah, welcome! I recognize the username from bikeforums.net/Electric Bikes sub. You'll find this forum has more eBike traffic than the sub at bikeforums.net.

To answer my own question above, only the "JW" suffix model has belt drive, and it's only available in black:

An update on my XP Lite:

  • It's getting infrequent use, as my daughter (12) has now decided she doesn't like eBiking either. I just dropped my car off at the stealership for AutoButler treatment (basically plan I bought with the car in which they detail it for me every 6 months) and rode the XP Lite the 8.7 miles back to work. It was a blast of a commute. Makes me wish my commute was longer, as I always feel so invigorated when I arrive to work from a longer bike commute.
  • The rear brake cable is either not clamped tightly enough or has stretched since new. I tensioned it a bit with the barrel adjuster by the brake disc and that got me safely back to work.
  • The (aftermarket) mirror joints need tightening. I tried keeping them a bit loose, so when it gets banged in transport, it will just move rather than break.
  • The cheap rack bag from Amazon is great; very convenient. Only problem is that it has the bungee strings on the top and the ends of it by the cinch adjuster is always in the way of the zippers.
  • When folded and loading into a car, it is hard to keep away from the chain. I always forget this, the chain greases me and then I remember the tote I bought for it in the back room. One might think: "Why not just lift the folded bike from the NON-chain side?" But it's super awkward. The tote is The Answer, or the aforementioned "JW" model with belt drive. I have belt drive on my (non-electric) gravel bike, and it is awesome. Only problem is that belt drive either comes with single speed bikes, or bikes with less efficient multi-speed gearing, such as Pinion or IGH. I do notice the power drain on my IGH gravel bike compared to my derailleur road bike.

Yup! As you see, it's a belt drive. I like the bike, and I've installed the rack and mudguards, as well as swapped out the "elite" headlight (which was worthless for night time riding, except for really being seen) for a Juiced Ebkes LED headlight. The seat, even their upgraded springer, sucked! Cloud 9 is now in its place w/the suspension seatpost. Also, I popped on a different BMX bar. My hands and wrists were getting numb, and even being 5'10, the distance between seat and handlebars was just not working for me.

I do have one thing that COMPLETELY drives me insane, and is a bit of a safety concern. The rear kickstand is too close to my heel. I keep getting the back of my foot caught, and I almost fell because of it while climbing a small banked curb. I'm probably going to swap that out for a dual leg kickstand instead. No more rolling it backwards, but it's worth the inconvenience. Oh, yeah, I'm also going to do the dual battery upgrade, eventually, as well.

I still have the regular, "non-elite" headlight on mine. I used it a couple times for nighttime riding, but I found it is only good for maybe 10 mph and for being seen. I remember switching it on and off in the dark on a bike path through the woods. It was dark, but there was still moonlight. I couldn't decide if it was better with the light on, but my night vision wrecked by it, or light off with eyes adjusted for the dark and having the moonlight. :-D

Which model of Cloud 9? I find their Giant Seat is fine. I just need to lean it back a bit further. I rode the bike about 21 miles yesterday on it. The seat shock is not awesome, like a Suntour NCX, but it makes a difference, along with the light springing effect in the seat and fattish tires. (2.5" wide?)

Yeah, I find that with the handlebar all the way up, it kind of pulls on the wiring at full lock in one direction, so I leave it a bit lower, and a BMX bar would help here. (but would make it a lot less compact when folded, so I didn't do it)

I'm a bit shorter than you at 5'8, so my shoes are probably a bit smaller too and I don't have the heel strike problem on the kickstand. They shortened the frame, compared to the regular XP series; maybe a bit too much for taller riders.

I still have an XP. 3.0 in the back of my mind, but just can't quite justify it, having already the XP Lite and Aventon Level.2. (considering how little offroading I do)

XP Lite 2.0 is out now. For the same price as the original, it adds:
  • Hydraulic brakes instead of cable/mechanical
  • Color display
  • Street tread tires instead of knobbies
  • 400% quieter motor than original (probably has plastic planetary gears instead of steel...)
  • PWR (Pedal assist Wattage Regulation) programming, so it's not cadence sensing by speed alone. (Ride1UUP does this) it can be turned off for full power.
  • BMX-style handlebar & stem instead of flat
  • 49 lbs. instead of 46 lbs. Probably has to do with the new battery and BMX handlebar.
  • JW Black version with belt drive is available too. (+$100, only in black frame color)
  • Standard & long range (+$200) batteries available
