Is buying a barely ever used (1 mile on odometer) Lectric Trike that’s 11 months old worth it?

Hi - I’m a 69-yr-old fit single woman living in an active senior community and looking to purchase my 1st electric trike (I want the stability). One of my neighbors bought a Lectric XP trike in April 2024, rode it to the community mailbox and back, and hasn’t ridden it since - says she thought she would be out riding all the time, but she travels a lot for business and never rode it a 2nd time. Seriously 1 mile on the odometer. My concern is purchasing it and not having a warranty since it hasn’t even been broken in yet. I’d love to help her out, but my initial thoughts are to buy new and have the warranty peace of mind. Thoughts? Thanks so much!

I like warranty, but in today's time idk if the warranty is as good as the paper it is written on.

Now if it is cheap enough, it could save you a bunch of money, buying used.

How much is she knocking of the price? For half price or less I would buy it. If the price isn't substantially reduced I would just buy new.
Thanks so much for your speedy response! She said she could sell it for $1,000. I don’t want to rip her off, but I’m clueless on how expensive repairs would be and even where repairs would be done. I live in a city but not sure where to start!

Thank you for responding so fast. She said $1,000 I’m pretty sure she would go a bit lower. But as a fellow senior, I don’t want to rip her off either (we get that too often already). I also don’t know how much repairs average so it’s difficult to build that into a fair sale price. I’d actually feel better if it had more miles! Where do you get e-bikes repaired? I live in a city so I’m sure there are bike shops nearby, but do they repair e-bikes? Thanks so much for helping me!

I'm not sure how easy it is to find qualified repair for the Lectric Trike in your area. I would do a Google search, something like: Lectric XP sales and service _insert city name here_ You can call them up and ask them about their services. Also most shops will be able to repair common things like brakes, chains, flat tires etc. It's the trickier electric and controller related parts that you'll want someone experienced to look at.

Something you may include in your decision; transport of said trike to the repair shop. If that will be an issue for you, be sure to ask those shops if they have a pick up/drop off service.

Good luck!

Thank you so much! I found an authorized Lectric bike repair service about 20 miles away - so not horrible. I’d probably have to rent a pickup truck to get it there so I’ll definitely give them a call and see what they offer. Thanks again! Great advice.

Yes that would be a save buy

The big issue is the battery and if it has been charged properly during the time the bike wasn’t used. Replacement batteries are expensive and going up with tariffs.

IMO, recumbent only. I've tried in laws, and can't abide the jutting back and forth. I googled yours, and you won't be happy on anything except the smoothest, flattest, roads/paths.

The fellow on YouTube, "Ebike Reviews and Adventures" has a lot of reviews on trikes. He likes the MeetOne trikes because of their stability. I would go and watch a few of his videos on all sorts of trikes, to get a feel for what you really need or want.

Battery condition is important.....current battery is $450 to replace......I would ask to borrow for a few days.....ride it....charge battery....make sure all is OK.

Buy your friend's, before she ruins the battery by leaving it charged.

If you need warranty help, your friend can provide you with the Order # or something to facilitate.

I would recommend taking it for a test ride first to see if you like how it rides. people move to trikes for stability only to realize they aren't as stable as they thought they would be. Trikes are fine if they are only used on perfectly flat sidewalks and trails. They are uncomfortable to ride on streets or trails with a high crown, or going through a transition at an angle. On a bike you are upright even if the road has a side slant but on a trike it leans over if the trail does.

People buy trikes because they think they can't/won't tip over but in many ways they are less stable than a bike not more.

If you can afford it have a look at recumbent trikes here's the first one I came to on a quick search.

They are so much more stable with two wheels in front and low center of gravity.

There are also some in-between trikes with the pedals forward and a lower seat height which would be more stable than a traditional trike but not as stable as a recumbent.

Good point to take it for a test ride.

Remember that as you turn a trike with paired wheels in the back, inertia will tend to move your body the opposite way, so that if you turn strongly right and don't also lean back and right, you will get thrown off to forward/left. Swerving is dangerous on these types of trikes.

However, balance at stops and low speeds is never an issue; one never has to put his feet down. Ride it like an old person, and you'll be fine.

Trikes with the wheel pair in the front are much more stable, but lose all the cargo capacity and usually have the rider quite low.

My wife has one. Maybe 18mths old. No issues. She uses it at our camp on KY Lake. She has gotten very comfortable with it. Anything less than $1k would seem attractive. Put about 20mi on it then decide.
