New Zealand's diverse climate throws a lot at your e-bike. From wet rides to scorching summers, a little extra care goes a long way in maintaining peak performance. Here are some key tips for e-bikes in NZ:

  • The Big 3: Tyres, Brakes, Chain. These are crucial for safety and efficiency. Regularly check tyre pressure (around 35 psi for town riding, 25-30 psi for off-road) and for wear. Ensure your brakes are in top condition due to the extra weight and speed of e-bikes. Inspect brake pads and replace them when needed. As for the chain, e-bikes demand more frequent lubrication than regular bikes. Use a high-quality lube regularly, or if you have a belt drive, monitor it for wear and replace it according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Cleaning is Key: Give your e-bike a good clean to prevent wear and tear. Use a bucket or low-pressure hose, a brush, and bike-specific cleaner (avoid pressure washers!). Keep the electrics off and dry the bike as best you can afterwards.
  • Battery Care: Maximize your battery life with good habits. Top up the charge regularly for optimal health, and avoid storing it in extreme temperatures (like a cold shed). When not in use, take the battery out and store it indoors at room temperature.
By following these simple tips, your e-bike will be ready to conquer anything New Zealand's climate throws your way!

So I thought you were NOT supposed to store your battery with a full charge? I heard between 20% and 80%, is that not the case?

Yes that is correct according to conventional wisdom. Don't run it down lower than 20% and don't store it above 80%. If you charge to 100% you should use it fairly soon.
