Hello everyone, name is Mike. I don’t own an e-bike yet but am in the market. I will be posting a thread for some guidance. Reddit only took me so far haha. I’m 39 live on Long Island, NY and will be causally riding short and long distances mainly on roads, paved bike paths, possibly some light trails, and taking it slow with my 5 year old as he rides his bike or as a passenger on mine. (Depending on which bike I end up with) nice to meet everyone and thanks in advance for any help you provide!

If you're carrying your growing son, go mid drive.

Do not use a bicycle child seat. If you tip over or even worse crash it will be the same as dropping or throwing your child from four feet in the air.
Children under one year old should not be on a bicycle at all.
Get a trailer at least, and even in a trailer the child should wear helmet, gloves and pads.

Many of us grew up having rides as little kids in child seats, just like we grew up without wearing helmets to ride a bike.

It's a decision for which the parents must make their own risk assessment.

A more reasonable approach is to decide where one will take their kids in the child seat. For example, maybe commuting is not a good option, if one would need to take busy city streets in an area where drivers don't seem to pay attention. I have a work buddy who has the trailer, has a helmet on his kid and only goes around in his own development or a nearby trail.

Really no different than a kid riding a bike except for the height which does matter. We used our bike trailer for our tots and even overturned it once. The straps held, the roll bar worked and the helmuts protected them. Every parent needs to set the boundary.
