Guys on step through e-bikes...

I’ve been on chemo 4 years which has taken its toll on my static balance and muscle strength. My step thru addresses these issues as cocking my leg over a crossbar would result in a loss of balance and I haven’t the energy for pedalling a normal bike. My e-bike step thru allows me to get out and do a few miles a day to build my muscles up by using the lowest PAS setting I can manage.
Hang in there Bob. The exercise can do you nothing but good.

Excellent! Keep pedaling and be safe out there!

when u swing one leg over , the opposing arm takes all the weight of the bike and your momentum . With a little help from your opposing foot .. fine for a 20-30 lb bike ; not so great for a 60-80lb one . My first fall ( tho from a standstill ) was trying a swing over the seat , on an incline . soon as my right leg started to clear , the front tire turned left and then the whole bike went that way ... no pain for me but it broke the Aventon seat ...
a step over LOOKS more racy , and now I'm in better shape so I could do it . but why bother ? just for macho pride ? Bike's not going to go any faster , with either style . I'm also riding clipped in most of the time , so a second delay in getting that foot out ain't good either ..

BTW smaug found a better solution to a battery wrap around your water bottle , without punching holes in the neoprene .. get one with a zipper , instead .. Couple of different brands on Amazon , have them ..

I’m 60 and finally just bought an e-bike. I always previously saw ebikes as a bit soft and not really cycling. But now on my commute to work I love the smooth acceleration up to 15 miles an hour which is the legal limit in the UK. I bought a ST (Trek District 4) but the handlebars tend to wobble a bit, especially when I go down a big hill by my house where I’m doing about 30 miles an hour, because the bike must lack structural rigidity a bit because of the lack of a crossbar. I’ve only had the thing for a couple of weeks so I’m still getting to know it, but I'm riding everywhere in Turbo mode at the moment, but also taking care not to get into a crash, obviously. I’m think I’m gonna mod it with some easy rider cowhorn handlebars which will only make the wobbling problem worse, but I just love sitting back and holding the big bars with metal riser bars at each end - a bit like Peter Fonda in the film easy rider. Another big benefit for me is that I used to hate braking on my previous bike which was very heavy and inefficent - so I'd taking risks at junctions etc just to maintain momentum. Now I don't mind coming to a stop because it's so easy to get up to speed again. So I'm safer overall.

I'm 62 and remember as a boy how we wouldn't be caught dead on a "girls" bike (i.e. step through). I still can't shake that feeling - and I don't need to. I want a cross bar, step OVER bike. you know....like a MAN!:giggle::giggle::giggle::giggle::giggle::giggle::giggle::giggle:
Why? Modern step overs are as strong as step thru's. With step thru's, non step over folks can borrow my bike when they visit.

The one difficulty is putting them in bike racks designed for step overs. We have one step over and one step thru, and can MacGyver both on our e bike 2" trailer carrier hitch. But if the hold down hadn't fortunately landed in her battery base, we would have been SOL.

Hoping for more recovery and biking time. Your + attitude girds up those around you, I'm sure.

They make temporary crossbars that latch on for use on step-throughs. One end latches around the seatpost, the other around the stem. I have a three of them and they work fine.

Many thanks. It might be a stocking stuffer for her.

Are they for riding with or just for fitting onto bike car racks?

Hi Andrew

in the 80's I used slip-in pedal clips with a kind of leather and aluminium holder for my feet.
Then I spent a decade with proper clip in MTB pedals with locking cleats on a Marin mountain bike in the 90s/2000s.
I loved the tight feeling of being one with the bike and also being able to pull the pedals as well as push them.
Apart from when I first got them and pedalled to a red light and forgot to twist my left foot out, and me and the bike crashed to the pavement!
But eventually I got a bad left knee and I realised it was because my pedals were forcing my knee to stay in a certain orientation.
So I got some flat non clip-in pedals and never looked back.
I was also concerned that with clip ins that I might actually want to part company with the bike rapidly one day rather than be locked to it...

Best wishes
James

A lot of sites now refer them only as “step-through” rather than “women's” bikes. I probably should have bought a step through but I wanted rear suspension which few ST bikes have. Plus I think frames look better with a top bar. And I’m that vane.

Could someone tell me, what do guys do when they have a top bar and a rear rack piled high with groceries? Do you take kick boxing lessons for a week, so you can learn to throw your leg that high up in the air?

At some point, it becomes easier to put the leg over the top tube than the groceries.

If we need that many groceries......I take our car to the store.
