ebikes usage in China and Japan?

Does anyone know what ebikes are popular in China and Japan? I read somewhere that ten to twenty percent of two wheeled vehicles in China are ebikes, and someone told me that he saw a lot of ebikes while he was visiting Japan.

Per this Japan Times article, about 1/2 of Japan's electric bikes are domestically produced, and regulated no throttle, 24kmh (~15mph) max speed. About 1/2 million ebikes are sold annually, "the electric bike industry is booming in an otherwise declining bicycle market".

Most likely the same type of ebikes as in Europe or USA. But also a lot of self made ones.
