Looking to get my first e-bike. As much as I want a Surron or Talaria I need something that is street legal and doesn’t require a license as my son who’s a teen will also be using it.

I’d like something can be me modded and made to go faster and have a longer range.

I see mixed opinions about what brand is best so I’ll post the ones I have my eyes on and maybe you all can help give some insight. Especially from those that own these and have modded them.

First up is the Super73 I love the look and resell value as well as the mod options. I was looking at the ZX or RX. Are they worth the price?

Second is the Ridstar q20 Pro. I’m finding these for around $1000 already modded and given that it looks like the super it has my attention, but given that they average 1/3 the price I’m curious if there’s lack of quality associated with it.

Lastly is the MacFox x1 or x7. This seems like a fairly new bike, but I have seen some for sale that have mods. It doesn’t seem like there is as many options, but they isn’t a deal breaker.

I appreciate anyone’s insight on helping me make a decision.

I will let other people weigh in on this as it is not my style of bike, but I lurk a lot on Upway's site ( apparently there is always another ebike just around the corner). They buy up overstocks and have a bunch of 73s and if it says only 3mi. it is usually brand new. So, they are a good place to look if you have a budget.

I appreciate this!

Ridstar doesn't stand behind their warranty very well. I tried for months to get warranty parts for my Ridstar E26 Pro to no avail. Don't get me wrong I love the bike and it's been great. In July the display started flaking out then in August the battery charger quit working. They gave me the run around until the warranty ran out on October 3rd.

I noticed a lot of people that mod these just replace parts with aftermarket or Surron parts. I’ve also heard Supers customer service is terrible too.

I honestly think the bike was a great buy for the price. I also think the warranty is garbage if you go in knowing that and accepting it then you should be fine. I have heard those Q20 bikes have trouble with the front forks so you may want to look in to that first.

Just looked at them online and for the life of me I don't get it. for $1200 you get a bike with a fixed seat, so pedaling is going to be tiresome to say the least and a small battery.

All bikes can be range extended with a second battery, or larger battery depending on the model. I added a 40AH second battery to my XP4 and the range on low settings would likely be around 200 miles rather than the 85 miles advertised. I am in a hilly area, my regular range was 16 miles, with the second battery it is at least 50 miles of long hills.

You want legal, but if you make it faster, it will be illegal . You might get a pass, but here in NJ they are cracking down on speedy bikes. A second battery will give you more power for hills and accelleration, but won't increase top speed.

A class 2 bike, legal for teenagers with no license in NJ, is allowed 20MPH on throttle, and 20 MPH PAS level 5. My Lectric XP$ can be switched to Class 3, throttle-20MPH, PAS 28 MPH. In NJ, Class 3 requires a license, registration and insurance.

I am not sure why you would want to go really fast on a bicycle. Would you ride an 80 MPH skateboard? I
t has been done, but being older, wiser, and adverse to pain, I would not go that fast.

Also, read Smaug's Note to Newbies. If you want to mod, a higher tier bike will have more options. For example, I went on Etsy, and Lectric XP$ search gave a bunch of upgrades and mods (utilitarian one) for my bike. See if there are specific mods for the models you are looking at. I recommend sticking to tier 4 or better bikes. You will find more information for Lectric, Aventon, Rad Power, etc. I picked Lectric because of there better then industry customer service.

TLDR:
Get a tier 4 or 5 bike as mods and customer service are better
Stay legal
A second battery can extend range and improve acceleration without increasing speed.

Hey chat!! Ended up going with the GhostCat f4x. Freaking love this bike! Thing is awesome and you can unlock its controller. Tops out at 45mph and I’m 200 lbs.

I am not concerned with legal. Just “looking” legal. This is my primary transportation for the time being and 20mph just isn’t going to cut it. I can pedal that fast on my road bike. Went with ghostcat which you can unlock to go faster than the “allowed” 28mph. Tops out at 45. It’s an awesome bike.

Thanks
