I have a Salsa Fargo hardtail with a decent front fork that has been running a BBSHD and a 52v battery for about 9 years riding in an area with some steep trails and roads. The motor has had a couple of sessions of being taken apart and greasing the bearings. I am afraid it is time to either send it somewhere to be rebuilt or replace the entire setup. I realize that one option is to go back to Luna cycle and order a new BBSHD & battery. The other option is to look around and see if there is another option. I am not looking for a 5000 watts motor bike but am open to a 1500 watt pedal assist set up. Any suggestions?

9 years out of a Bafang and battery is a good run!

I'm interested, does the BBSHD no longer run anymore, or is there a battery issue?

Personally I'd order the same thing again, because it sounds like you got a lot of use out of it.

After replacing the bearing set for the second time, I decided it was time to retire this little workhorse. I did try taking the motor apart and greasing the bearings but it was only about a hundred miles before the grinding sounds came back. Bafang told me that I should not be setting my PAS at zero for long periods so maybe the grinding sound is more my fault. Since we do tend to enjoy multi day rides I will probably buy a larger 52v battery and put my current battery on one of our spare BBS02 powered bikes (used primarily by summer guests). I think I would like to find about the same power in a motor with a torque sensor but haven’t found one that was not either underpowered or overpowered. I was told by one of the shops dealing with CYC motors that they were bringing out a new motor very similar to the BBSHD but with cadence and/or torque sensors.

The new motor is called the Proton and looks like a more powerful Photon2. CYC is planning on having it available in the states sometime in August. Unfortunately, I don’t have much more info on it.

So, Bafang said PAS-0 is bad for the motor!? First time I hear of that. I usually start in PAS-0 before turning on the motor. Maybe dial down PAS-1?

That is probably ok. I rode the bike for about a year in Southern CA on the strand which is a 20 something bike path on the beach. It is probably 99% flat and I rode the flats on PAS-0 as the bike traffic was usually running about 10mph. This apparently was not good for the motor as I was told it was designed for use in PAS 1+

Good to know this. Something a person never thinks about.
Also interested in what motor you purchase.
For me with a load a 500W motor is plenty, plenty powerful enough,
