I am interested in getting an extra 4-5 mph out of my bike so it can consistently hit 40 mph to keep up with street traffic.

If I switch out my 48v battery to a 52v battery, will that get my bike those few extra mph?

What concerns me is that the amperage setting on my bike is a “fixed” 21A …
So even if I upgrade to a 52v battery for increased amps,
will the extra amperage be made of none effect by the unchangeable controller setting of 21A ? …
Will the bigger battery still not increase the speed of my bike, or will it just get greater power for going up hills and greater distance range?

Thanks for the input in advance!

Also, if you are going to exceed the 35mph limit make sure your brakes and wheels and tires are rated for the desired speed.
Failing to do that is setting yourself up for a fall. (PI)
Being able to stop is paramount when traveling at speed. This means thick hefty rotors and four piston hydraulic calipers.
The tires and rims need to be able to maintain integrity at speed too. Having a tire break the bead at 50mph is worse than a blowout.
At 50mph a 27” tire is rotating at over 500 rpm. That’s a lot of centrifugal force trying to pull the tire off the rim. If you hit a rock or a pothole or a porcupine at that speed with standard bike tires it can be disastrous.
Thanks for watching out for me, and I have NO desire to go 50mph on this bike, just closer to 40, just hitting 37.4 last Tuesday was approaching a slight speed discomfort level for me, so the idea of me going 50mph on this bike is out of the question -HA!

My bike is equipped with dual hydraulic brakes, and the disc rotors are 2.75mm thick, and it has four piston calipers , but even so I have no desire to go 50mph on it, just hoping for being closer to 40 for me to blend in with traffic flow instead of causing traffic flow to slow on my account or cars having to pass me

My day job is a driver, I pick up and deliver new cars, and while traveling the different roads around our shop, I always keep a keen eye out for new potholes and the like, knowing which roads I will be traveling on my bike. I installed an 80 psi air canister air horn which lets out a 120db blast, which I had to use just the other day to deter a good sized dog from charging at me.

Anyway, I try to be as safe on the road as I can, and so along with the air horn, I replaced the stock pedals for larger ones, I have added side mirrors, a four function 20,000 lumen head lamp, along with bright yellow LED turn signals front and rear which have constant flashing small red led attention getters to match the one on my helmet …

Again, thanks, I will be watching out for porcupines now too HA, but here in Oklahoma we usually have to watch out for deer Bob~

Received the new 52v battery today, charged it up and installed it on my bike …

It is Definitely more “beefy”, and noticeably so just in taking off out of our driveway - more power more torque!
Still unable to report for sure today about an increase in top speed, but definitely an increase in “performance”.

This battery even has a USB port on it too.

I wasn't able to take it out and really put it through the motions like I was wanting to do, because we had a snow and ice storm here yesterday, and there are still several stretches and patches of ice and black ice on the roads in various places.

I WAS able to take the bike over a couple streets from our house and onto a block without any ice and that has short a downhill stretch, where the bike hit 36.6 mph before my having to brake in order to make the turn.

There was also about a 5-6 mph breeze blowing against me, so I still remain hopeful of being able to get that extra 2-3 mph I was hoping for, but I will need to make the 6 miles trek going to and from work to find out for sure

Tomorrow my wife doesn't need to use her car, so I will be driving it instead of the bike, that way I don't have to play hide and seek with the ice on the roads.

A quick over view of the differences in the batteries, a 52v has 4 more cells than a 48v, and it charges to a maximum of 58.8volts and empties at 42volts, and a 48v charges to a maximum of 54.6volts and empties out at 41volts.

After running the bike around the neighborhood tonight, the 52v battery was displaying 4 “bars” of power on the digital display.

Switching back the P-3 protocol setting to 48volts from the 52v setting, the digital readout displayed a full 5 bars of power, displaying as it would with a fully charged 48v battery. So, from the display, it acts like the 52v holds 20% more of a charge than the 48v battery does, at least by the displaying of 5 full power bars when the 52v setting only had 4 power bars.

BTW, for anyone who might be interested, this new 52v battery off eBay, required no altering of the battery mounting brackets or any of the Amyet S8 wiring, it just slid right into place where the 48v did, and the only changes were switching the P-3 setting from 48v to 52v.

I will do another update next week, Bob~

(in case someone wants the eBay link for the battery I purchased here it is below)

There has been no ice around me now and the temp today was 44*, So it seemed like an opportune time to take the bike out for its second test run.

Before leaving I reduced my P6 wheel diameter setting down to 14” from 19.3”, and attached my iPhone to the handlebars so I could watch my actual speed with its speedo app

My bike almost hit 39mph - 38.8 mph on my cell phone app, all time record for my bike on that app!

So the testimony that the other 52v user gave me was true, replacing a 48v with a 52v gives you a few more mph, so YAY! (not to mention better overall performance, including about about 10% more range if you dont use all you power up racing the throttle HA!)

I was hoping for 40mph, but almost 39 is pretty dang close, so I am happy and I’ll take it!

Hope this thread helps some other folks with the information everyone has contributed - Thanks again all !!!

Blessings, Bob~

Good deal there are other small things you can do to increase speed. First run your tires at full pressure and if they are still at all soft over air them a little getting rid of the flat spot on the bottom when you sit on the bike.

Today, there was a 9 mph SSE wind blowing against me all the way to work

Left the house with the temps at 25* with a wind chill of 15*.

But, in spite of the wind against me, the bike still hit 35mph with the new 52v battery.

It feels stronger, even if it isn't by much, it IS a noticeable difference in performance or "power",
The upgrade cost me $325.00 but it was well worth it for me ! ... maybe my next step - a 1500watt rear motor hub HA!

{ if you are looking, please just ignore the "duration" number on the speedometer app pic.
The DURATION starts when I hit record on the app,
then the phone goes into the bike bag,
then I get all my winter weather gear on,
then the ride to work, then clocking in,
then pulling out the battery charger to charge the bike,
then plugging the charger into the bike,
THEN I get the phone out and turn off the record on the app ...
my trip here to and from work is normally about 15-20 minutes on average }

----------------------------------------------------------------
{edited 2:15pm}
Just checked my air pressure on my tires and both of them were low -
17.5lbs on the rear tire, and 18lbs on the front ...
very interested in seeing what my top speed might reach on my way home tonight!

Latest update:

Hit 39mph today with the help of an aft breeze

52v battery increased the power for sure, more available power for going against the wind and uphill

I changed my wheel setting again this morning before heading out,
this time going from 14” to 16” (actual wheel size 20”)
and it sounds like the motors are not “whining” as much and the bike has a better “feel” of balanced torque …

There was a 25 mph crosswind against me coming home tonight,
but surprisingly the bike was still able to hit 36.1 mph.

I dont think I posted this here, but I went ahead and got insurance for my bike yesterday.
It was $148.00 for the year, medical, liability, and comprehensive in case of theft.

Since it is a “class 4”, I had read somewhere that it needs to be licensed and insured.

After getting the insurance verification form,
I went to the tag agency next,
but since there was no “title” or a “serial number” with more than 10 digits,
there was no way for the tag agent to complete the “fields” on the computer to process getting the tag…

They then had me contact the DMV to see about generating title for it,
but they couldnt do so either …

So, after 30 minutes on the phone with “Service Oklahoma” (dmv)
they told me that in the event that I got pulled over,
to just tell the officer it doesnt require registration or licensing ….

But I intend on going there in person to see if I can get that “on record” and “in writing”
just in case.

… and for grins, I got on Amazon and ordered a personalized motorcycle tag to go on the back of the rear basket (see pic)

We will see how it goes HA!

Who do you even get Bicycle insurance with?
Hi,

Since Allstate doesn’t do ebike insurance, my allstate agent connected me with “American Modern”, and then walked me through their digital docu-sign proceedures …
here is a link at the bottom

Just having the insurance makes me feel so much better about driving it on city streets should I ever get pulled over

We have next to nothing here in OKC, OK, for designated “bike lanes”, so I don't have much choice but to ride in the lanes, and class 4 e-bike are not allowed on the “trails” .

I'm not a stickler for being legal so just for your info Amazon sells regulation E-bike Class stickers. Personally I think having such limited power is crazy a bike with a little juice can get out of the way of trouble and dogs! Doesn't mean you need to ride around above the legal limit either.
