My first charger 36v boiled my battery pack supplied with my kit. Luckily the dealer acknowledged responsibility and replaced both the charger and the batteries.
I use a timer set at 4 hrs whenever I charge my batteries now, and have never had another problem. When charging without the timer I always unplug the charger after 4 hours.
I let the battery pack sit for about an hour (let's them cool down a bit) or until cool then plug in again until they are fully charged checking the LED's visually and the batteries by hand for temperature. I also use a multi meter to ensure proper charging voltage and charge. Another idea is to check the temperature of the batteries with your hand every so often.
